Most users are confused about SFP and SFP+ compatibility: Would it be possible to use SFP module in SFP+ Slot? If users connect the SFP transceiver modules to SFP+ transceivers, what about the data rate? Apart from those, Can users insert SFP+ transceiver module to the SFP port on switch? This article will focus on whether it would be possible to use SFP module in SFP+ Slot.



SFP is a compact, hot-pluggable optical module transceiver used for both telecommunication and data communications applications ,SFP+ is an enhanced version of the SFP that supports data rates up to 16 Gbit/s,which can be used in 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Optical Transport Network standard OTU2


SFP transceiver module could be inserted into SFP+ Ports

Generally speaking, SFPs could work in SFP+ slot, but SFP+ transceiver module could not work in SFP slots due to power availability problems. When users insert the SFP module into SFP+ port, the speed of this port will be 1G instead of the 10G. this port will also lock the speed at 1G at times unless you reload the switch or perform some fancy set of commands. In addition, the SFP+ port usually can never support speed below 1G. That is , users would not be able to insert the SFP in the SFP+ port. Basically, it might reply on the switch modules for this case, sometimes it is possible that SFPs are supported in SFP+ ports, and sometimes it is not possible. To illustrate, nearly all SFP+ ports of Cisco switch could support SFPs as well as many SFP+ ports of Brocade switch can just support SFP+. Even though it’s practical mostly, it will be more reliable to know switch vendor about related parameters.


SFP+ would not able to be autonegotiation with 1G to support SFP transceiver modules.

According to my experience,It is different from the copper SFPs available for autonegotiation with 10/100/1000, SFP and SFP + optics do not support autonegotiation. as a matter of fact, most of SFP and SFP + will just operate at rated speed.

We can use the SFP transceiver module on the SFP+ port in different aspect,however,it does not indicate that SFP can be plugged into SFP+ ports which can offer 1G. In a fiber-optic link, it might not work if we insert an SFP transceiver module into one side of the SFP+ port (1G) and then insert the SFP + transceiver module on the other side of the SFP + port (10G). Therefore,based on this issue, it could not negotiate down 1G when you use SFP+ high-speed cable.



Please ensure that it is identical for the speeds at both ends of the fiber link whenever you use SFP and SFP + transceiver modules in your network. 10G SFP transceiver modules could work extremely well in SFP+ ports, however, SFP transceiver modules could not be plugged into SFP+ transceiver modules. in view of different speeds, transmission distances and wavelengths, the 10G SFP+ transceiver modules can only be used with 10G SFP + ports and can never be automatically compatible with 1G.
